MARCH 2005 MOVIE VIEWING #705 - #712
29 Tuesday
Dersu Uzala ( Akira Kurosawa 1975. 141 mins) 4 / 5
[World Movies ] Film #712
Striking, beautifully paced film. Maksim Munzuk is extraordinary as Dersu Uzala, the hunter who guides Yuri Solomin on his expedition. A heartfelt, warm narrative of two men and their bond. A film that touched me deeply.
25 Friday
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou ( Wes Anderson 2004. 118 mins) 3 / 5
[35mm Sun Theatre- Trocadero Cinema 1.30pm] 1st viewing. Film #711
Quirky, original, colourful and witty. A great story with wonderful supporting cast. Bill Murray's best performance. The look of the film, with its mutli style of shooting was brilliant- as was the choice of soundtrack.
19 Saturday
Volcano ( Mick Jackson 1997. 102 mins) 2 / 5
[Movie Greats 1st viewing. Film #710
Typical run of the mill disaster film. Tommy Lee Jones appears to be the only person in all of Los Angeles to know what to do and to be able to make decisions. Whilst it is nothing special, the idea was good.
Red Badge of Courage ( John Houston 1951. 69 mins) 3 / 5
[TCM] 1st viewing. Film #709
Great film involving Audie Murphy as a soldier who flees whilst his men are under attack, only to feel grief upon his return to his regiment. The wonderful thing about this film is the supporting cast - most actors appear for just a few moments but they are indelibly seared into your mind, especially John Dierkes as 'The Tall Soldier'. Audie Murphy as the fleeing soldier is wonderful. Short , sharp and great cinematography.
18 Friday
Act of Violence ( Fred Zimmerman 1952. 82 mins) 3 / 5
[TCM] 1st viewing. Film #708
Wonderful story of a disillusioned and bitter soldier, exacting revenge of his senior officer who betrayed his men whilst they were Prisoner of Wars. Robert Ryan is wonderful as the soldier out for revenge and Van Heflin holds his own of a man falling apart. Janet Leigh's performance is dramatic. The only downfall is the ending, which is abrupt .
12 Saturday
White Heat ( Raoul Walsh 1949. 114 mins) 3 / 5
[TCM] 1st viewing. Film #707
James Cagney is scintillating as gangster Cody. A wonderful Gagster Fim Noir film, with a very famous ending 'Top of the World Ma!' . It's films like this, driven by an actor whose performance is mesmerising, that makes cinema wonderful.
6 Sunday
Singin' In the Rain ( Gene Kelly / Stanley Donen 1952. 102 mins) 3 / 5
[TCM] 1st viewing. Film #706
Enjoyable, bright, funny, witty, energetic film. Some slow points. Donald O'Connor is the standout , and his performance of 'Make Em Laugh' is surely one of cinema's great moments.
2 Wednesday
Hitch ( Andy Tennant 2004. 121 mins) 2 / 5
[35mm Highpoint Cinema 6 7.00pm] 1st viewing. Film #705
Badly written story. This film was 20-30 minutes too long. Whilst all the cast worked pretty well with each other, many characters in the film seemed inconsistent in their belief , mannerism and motivation.
